“i Own This Genre.”- Ayushmann Khurrana On Doing Quirky Comedies filmfare.com
What prompted you to say yes to Badhaai Ho?
For me the first and foremost priority is script. This is the first script after Dum Laga Ke Haisha which got me excited and I said yes immediately after reading. Shantanu (Srivastava) and Akshat (Ghildial) have written an amazing script. This is one of the most exciting script I have ever heard. This is my zone, my genre… quirky comedy. I own this genre. And this is a step further in that genre.
Which were the things which excited you so much?
In this one, I think the whole quirky mad family which excited me a lot and also the director. I always wanted to work with Amit Sharma. We had discussed one film earlier also but that didn’t happen. When I told Adi (Aditya Chopra) sir also about Badhaai Ho that I read the script and then I took the narration, he was really happy. He is very fond of Amit Sharma because of his work in advertising. I have been fan of Amit’s work.
What can we expect from the fresh pair of Sanya and Ayushmann?
Best part is both of us know the region very well. We both are from Delhi. Though I’m from Chandigarh but I know Delhi very well. So, we understand the language. The most challenging part for me is how to be different every single time because this is not my first film based in Delhi. Vicky Donor was based in Delhi, then Bewkoofiyaan was there and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan was also based there. Best part is we have a different accent in Badhaai Ho. Our family belongs to Meerut. So, I have Meeruthiya accent. Main thodi-bahut Hariyanvi bhi bol raha hoon ismein. I’m speaking English also because my work space is corporate.
